The mythological bride of the sun god Helios, Rhodes bathes in warmth. Her arid coast yields to unspoilt villages nestled in the foothills of the forested interior. Rhodes Town, the island's capital, is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe. The Old Town recalls over 200 years of island rule by the Knights of St John. It is divided into two. Gothic inns line the cobblestone Avenue of Knights in the Castello. In the Hora, the pink domed Mosque of Suleyman commemorates their ousting by the Ottomans.
On to Faliriki, the island's première resort, with the best sandy beach on the island, excellent watersports facilities and lively nightlife. On the east coast, the Acropolis of Lindos perches high above a cluster of immaculately white, 17th century houses. Further down, the coast becomes an almost uninterrupted beach. Genadi to Plimiri is the most peaceful stretch.
The monastery of Moni Skiadi stares serenely down to the west coast, a windsurfer's delight. Monolithos has a spectacularly sited castle. There are fine views to the mountains from the Temple of Athena crowning the extensive ruins at Kamiros. Head on to the coastal resort of Ixia with its shingle and sand beach, the site of some of the island's leading hotels.
Back in nearby Rhodes Town, the bronze deer at Mandraki Harbour, the statuesque symbols of the island, silently sun themselves.
